The Petition is Off!

February 11, 2007

Just to let you all know, thank you so much to those of you who signed the petition to the Archbishop of Canterbury.  In the end there were about 330 signatures, of lay, priest and episcopal orders.  About 85% were from the U.S., 14% from the U.K., 2% from Canada, and the rest from Africa and other places.  What a great response for an unplanned, spur-of-the-moment, mostly word-of-mouth campaign.  Just think what we can do if we actually ORGANIZE something.

Several have asked– since there was an opportunity to donate to the site which runs the petition service– how to financially contribute.  I would suggest joining or making a donation to Integrity USA.  Go to the site here, and click the link which says (strangely enough) DONATE NOW.  Integrity sponsors actions such as the petition drive, but also does so much more.  It gives grants to GLBT organizations internationally trying to find their voice, it works to give voice to those domestically within the church, and helps give support to all of us who don’t always get the support of the church when we need it.

But now, it is now 1:00am and I have spent the last six hours working on finding a way to get the petition into +++Rowan’s hands (and those of ++Katharine’s).

So now the deed is done, and we’ll see if he gets it, and if he responds.

Of course the most important part for me was finding our voice– was learning that we don’t have to be rationalize our experience against that of the heterosexual experience in order to “win” our way into the church.  The church has to accept us just as we are, and we’ve got to stop apologizing for being who we are or it isn’t worth getting in to.

That seems so silly and self-evident to say, but the power of the closet runs so deep, doesn’t it?

That’s just not something you can explain to most straight people.

Anyway – good night!  And I’m leaving the petition up, so if you didn’t get a chance to sign before, you can still sign here— it won’t be delivered to Lambeth, but you can still add your name as a sign of solidarity.

    Dear Jeff,
Thank you so much for initiating the action alert petition. It was AWESOME!

    Regards,
    Gordon
P.S. As we await what happens in Tanzania this week, here is a prayer to help encourage us and lift us up emotionally and spiritually:

May God bless you with discomfort …
at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships,
so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger …
at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people,
so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless you with tears …
to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war,
so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them
and to turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with enough Holy foolishness …
to believe that you can make a difference in this world,
so that you can do what others claim cannot be done! Amen!
